Indonesia Digital Literacy Status (2020 - 2023)
At Katadata Insight Center, Mulya was Member of Expert Panel (and previously Research Director) for the annual Indonesia Digital Literacy Status, co-produced with the Ministry of Communications and Informatics.
Katadata Insight Center and the Ministry of Kominfo produced an annual study on Indonesia's digital literacy status, from the national to the provincial level.
Over the past three years, the results of the Digital Literacy Status Survey show that the level of digital literacy in Indonesia has continued to grow. Most provinces have experienced an increase during this period. DKI Jakarta is the province with the largest increase in the Digital Literacy Index in 2023 and is ranked as the province with the highest Digital Literacy Index in Indonesia this year.
People's habits in using the internet show the same pattern when compared to the previous year. People generally use the internet to socialize, access entertainment, and get information. However, the intensity of internet use in the last two years has tended to decline. This is because face-to-face work and learning activities have occurred more after the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions that occurred throughout 2020-2022. The 2023 Indonesia Digital Literacy Status Survey also looks at the digital activities of Indonesian people ahead of the 2024 political year. Most respondents stated that they would tend to be passive in responding to political information. Activities carried out, such as spreading political news, will be done more in the family and friendship circles via WhatsApp.
The measurement of the Digital Literacy Index was carried out through a face-to-face survey conducted in July-August 2023. The determination of the survey sample was carried out using the multistage random sampling method. The total respondents in this year's Digital Literacy Index measurement were 10,000 people with a Margin of Error (MoE) of +/- 0.98% at a 95% confidence level. The respondents included in the sample were people aged 13-70 years, and had accessed the internet in the last 3 months. This method and approach has been applied consistently since the implementation of the Digital Literacy Status Survey in Indonesia.
