In his op-ed published at Katadata.co.id on 24 July 2025, Mulya argued that:

  • Indonesia successfully negotiated a 19% import tariff rate to the US, down from 32%, the lowest in ASEAN (excluding Singapore). This successful economic diplomacy was led by Presidents Prabowo Subianto and Airlangga Hartarto.

  • The US consumer market remains crucial for Indonesia due to its large size, high purchasing power, and complementary production structures. Indonesian export products, such as garments and footwear, are labor-intensive and have a comparative advantage in the US market.

  • This 19% tariff rate represents the best outcome considering the increasing trend of deglobalization and protectionism. This tariff rate provides a competitive advantage for Indonesian products compared to competing countries, opening up opportunities for increased exports and job creation.
